"My father started farming at this location in 1952, and I eventually took over the business," says livestock farmer Meijer Smit from Zevenhoven. His combined farm currently houses 120 dairy cows and 1,600 finishing pigs. The finishing pigs have been reared for several years using the Frievar concept, where hygiene is an absolute top priority.
In the past, Meijer relied solely on a deferrization system and a reverse osmosis system for what initially seemed like "perfect spring water." However, problems arose further down the pipelines: the pigs' drinking nipples regularly clogged, and a slimy film and green deposits quickly appeared in the cows' drinking troughs after cleaning.
The Frievar concept meetings, where the importance of excellent drinking water quality is continually emphasized, prompted Meijer to implement a chlorine dioxide system. While this largely brought water quality under control, the operating costs proved substantial, and the air scrubber filter still clogged due to the presence of biofilm. "You have to use those jerrycans quickly, of course, but you sometimes forget, meaning you have to use more to reduce the contamination," Meijer explains. "Then, at some point, you're spending €120 every 10 days, without the desired result."
That's why Meijer started looking for a sustainable alternative. "I'd seen a Watter ad before and decided to invite a sales representative to see if their solution would work here," says Meijer. "The guy had a compelling story. After making some calls, we finally decided to buy it right away, and I haven't regretted it for a moment."
The results were visible after just a week, especially at the cows' water troughs. "Normally, that layer would quickly reappear on the water, but it didn't reappear. The buildup on the edges of the troughs also stayed away," Meijer notes with satisfaction.
Meijer is now deeply convinced that optimal drinking water quality is the vital link for optimal animal health, improved feed conversion, and ultimately, improved performance of his livestock. "All the improvements we've implemented in recent years are now even more effective. We've increased both piglet growth and milk production by approximately 10%."
For Meijer Smit, it's clear: investing in the Watter solution was the missing link in his animals' health and productivity, and has put an end to the frustration and expense of previous methods.
