Tell us something about yourself. Who are you and what do you like to do for fun?

Hi everyone! My name is Lennard Kuipers, I’m 22 years old, and I’m originally from North Holland. Four years ago, I traded the coast for Drenthe, in order to pursue my passion for science. I’ve always been fascinated by how broad the world of biology is. It goes from plants to human cells and everything in between. But my true love? Microbiology. There is something incredibly unique about using things you can’t even see to create medicines or polymers!

What are you studying and how does that relate to your internship at Watter?

I’m studying Biology and Medical Laboratory Research. At Watter, I get to apply my love for microorganisms to a real-world challenge. Before coming here, I always used ethanol for disinfection, but that can be harmful to ones health. Watter offers a solution that doesn't cost the either environment or our health. On top of this, seeing how this technology helps so many farms and businesses, is inspiring.

What is your first impression of Watter?

It’s a great company with an extremely interesting business model. It’s honestly "cool" that you can create powerful disinfection from just water, salt, and electricity. Disinfection technology isn’t something you see every day in biology, so it’s a beautiful new challenge for me to dive into.

What are you looking forward to most during this internship?

The fieldwork! I can’t wait to get out there, collect samples from cows, and test the results to get an insight into their health. Seeing the laboratory results translate into healthier animals is the ultimate goal.

What is the most interesting thing you’ve encountered so far?

The coolest fact I’ve learned is that our own human bodies actually produce HOCl - the same active ingredient in the Watter solution! I also find working with qPCR very interesting to investigate the starting DNA of the samples we find.

Is there anything you wish to tell future interns looking for an internship?

If you like a mix of high-tech lab work and seeing the actual impact of your research in the field, this is the place to be. It’s a side of biology that is often overlooked but incredibly vital for a sustainable future.

Lastly, which song goes on the speakers if you’re the boss of the music?

If I’m in charge of the playlist, we’re turning up the energy! It’s definitely going to be "Hardstyle is Back" by Krowdexx and TOZA.
